hypertrophic pulmonary osteoarthropathy

osteoarthropathy /os·teo·ar·throp·a·thy/ (-ahr-throp´ah-the) any disease of the joints and bones.
hypertrophic pulmonary osteoarthropathy , secondary hypertrophic osteoarthropathy symmetrical osteitis of the four limbs, chiefly localized to the phalanges and terminal epiphyses of the long bones of the forearm and leg; it is often secondary to chronic lung and heart conditions.

Expansion of the distal ends or entire shafts of the long bones, which is sometimes associated with erosion of the articular cartilages, thickening and villous proliferation of the synovial membranes, and often with finger clubbing. Also called Bamberger-Marie disease, Marie's disease.

Hyperplastic osteoarthritis, hypertrophic osteoarthropathy Pulmonology A condition characterized by distal expansion and/or periostitis of long bones, clubbing of fingers and toes, arthritis–related to cartilaginous erosion, and/or synovial proliferation, joint pain and, occasionally, autonomic dysfunction–eg, pallor, flushing, profuse diaphoresis; HPO is classically associated with lung disease–eg, abscesses, cancer, COPD, emphysema, chronic interstitial pneumonitis, but may rarely be idiopathic–as in pachydermoperiostosis.
