2. denoting a solution having greater osmotic pressure than the solution with which it is compared.

hypertonic

Etymology: Gk, hyper + tonos, stretching
1  adj, pertaining to a solution that causes cells to shrink.
2  n, a solution that increases the degree of osmotic pressure on a semipermeable membrane. Compare hypotonic, isotonic.

adj having an osmotic pressure greater than that of the solution with which it is compared.
