hydroxybutyric acid /hy·droxy·bu·tyr·ic ac·id/ (-bu-tir´ik) any of several hydroxy derivatives of butyric acid; β-h.a. (3-h.a.) is a ketone body and is elevated in the blood and urine in ketosis, and γ-h.a. (4-h.a.) is elevated in some body fluids in semialdehyde dehydrogenase deficiency.
