hydroxybutyric acid/hy·droxy·bu·tyr·ic ac·id/ (-bu-tir´ik) any of several hydroxy derivatives of butyric acid; β-h.a. (3-h.a.) is a ketone body and is elevated in the blood and urine in ketosis, and γ-h.a. (4-h.a.) is elevated in some body fluids in semialdehyde dehydrogenase deficiency.
Any of several organic acids, C4H8O3, that are derivatives of butyric acid. One of these acids, beta-hydroxybutyric acid, is a ketone body that accumulates in the blood and urine when fat is being metabolized.
C4H8O3, any of the acids present in the urine, esp. in diabetic ketoacidosis, when the conversion of fatty acids to ketones increases.
