The award to B'Tselem, for "bringing to the public spotlight human right violations in the occupied territories," was accepted by B'Tselem's executive director, Jessica Montell. Leishman enumerates the various religious and academic groups that applauded this decision, including the counsel of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops, who "laud(ed) it as a 'strong affirmation and much needed reminder that freedom of religion is a fundamental human right and public freedom that is guaranteed by the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms . Governments that accept trade agreements under which people lose their basic food security, health services and housing on a sustained basis violate people's human right to an adequate standard of living. |
