Human Genome Project
n.
An international research effort to map and identify the role of all genes in the human genome.

Human Genome Project [hu´man je´nōm]
an international effort, begun in the late 1980s, for mapping the sequence and analyzing the structure of all the DNA in the human genome. It is producing a very large amount of genetic information. Ethics has been a major concern in all aspects of the project, including development, design, and implementation. Ethical use of the information is concerned with the control, diffusion, and use within the context of a free market economy.

human genome project,
n a federally sponsored research project to identify and map the entire gene pool.

Human Genome Project
A multinational collaborative effort to sequence–map all 80,000+ genes and 3 x 109 nucleotides of a haploid set of the human genome, begun in 1986 and completed in 2002 at a total cost of US $3 x 109. Cf Bioinformatics, Genomics, Junk DNA, Rough draft, Sequencers.

This effort builds on Regeneron's internal discovery efforts, as well as the human genome initiative.
The Los Alamos lab and its so-called GenBank (a repository for genetic sequencing data) join Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California and Columbia University as the primary centers for the Department of Energy's (DOE) Human Genome Initiative (HGI).
