human T-cell lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-I), a type C oncovirus of worldwide distribution but most common in Japan, Africa, and the Caribbean basin, having an affinity for helper/inducer T lymphocytes, that causes chronic infection and is associated with adult T-cell leukemia and lymphoma and tropical spastic paraparesis.
