huang lian e jiao tang (hwäng lē·en jyōw täng),
n in traditional Chinese medicine, a classic herbal formula used to treat high heart fire, a deficiency of yin, characterized by a tongue with a red tip that is covered with a yellow coating and a thin, rapid pulse. The patient will also present symptoms of being mentally overworked and restless. Insomnia will be an indication in addition to frequent dreams, dry mouth, boils within the tongue and mouth, neurasthenia, and forgetfulness. Coptis and e jiao are the two chief ingredients used in the formula. Also called
