1. a trypanocide; used as the bromide or chloride salt. May cause transient hepatic insufficiency. Called also ethidium.
2. a dye much used for the staining of DNA fragments after electrophoretic separation in agarose gels. The molecule intercalates across the double helix and is detected by UV illumination.
