nares /na·res/ (na´rēs) [L.] the nostrils; the external openings of the nasal cavity.
nares [ner′ēz] sing. naris, the pairs of anterior and posterior openings to the nasal cavity that allow the passage of air to the pharynx and ultimately the lungs during respiration. See also anterior nares, posterior nares. nares [na´rēz] (L.) plural of na´ris, the external openings of the nasal cavity; called also nostrils.
nares caudal nares see choana. holorhinal nares the type of external nostrils found in many gallinaceous and anserine birds. The nostril does not reach beyond the nasal-frontal hinge. schizorhinal nares a kind of nostril found in some birds. The external nares are long and slit-like and extend caudally beyond the nasal-frontal hinge. stenotic nares a congenital anomaly found most commonly in brachycephalic dogs. There is inspiratory dyspnea, often forcing open-mouth breathing, and sometimes coughing or gagging. Associated anomalies, such as elongated soft palate and everted laryngeal saccules, are common, as are secondary changes in the respiratory tract, including laryngeal and tracheal collapse.
