A relatively inactive, immobile macrophage found in normal connective tissue. Also called fixed macrophage, histocyte.

Histopathology of the parotid mass revealed that it was made up of a group of lymph nodes whose architecture was preserved; the mass contained a proliferation of histiocytes, hyperplastic follicles, enlarged germinal centers, and epithelioid cells with abundant, pale eosinophilic cytoplasm (figure 2).
Biopsy of the plaques showed granulomatous infiltration of histiocytes.
Pathologic findings of granuloma, fibrosis, and histiocytes suggest a local foreign-body-type reaction to metallic mercury.
