Parasitology A class of segmented annelids–ie, leeches, the most well-known of which is Hirudo medicinalis, that evolved from earthworms and are found in fresh water and soil in the subtropics and tropics Genera Haemadipsa, medicinal leech, Dinobdella, Haementeria, Helobdella, Hirudinaria, Hëmopis, Limnatis, Macrobdella, Poecilobdella, Pontobdella; the leech is flat, has 2 suckers, the cranial sucker houses a mouth–the impression left by a leech bite has been fancifully likened to the Mercedes-Benz insignia; the caudal sucker is involved in crawling
