A condensation product obtained by the action of ammonia on formaldehyde; in acidic urine, it decomposes to yield formaldehyde, a urinary antiseptic.

The appearance of this compound is believed to be a reaction product of octadecanoic acid (stearic acid) associated with metal stearate mold release agent and ammonia from hexamethylene tetramine curing agent.
Additional sources of nitrogen include sand additives and polymerization catalysts (urea, hexamethylene tetramine, triethylamine, ammonium chloride, flour and seacoal).
