heterotopic pain, pain that appears in the wrong part of the body, such as pain originating in the gallbladder that may be felt in the right shoulder. The phenomenon seems to be caused by projection of sensory neurons from different parts of the body into the same regions of the central nervous system. Also called referred pain.
