hypopigmentation [-pig′məntā′shən] Etymology: Gk, hypo + L, pigmentum, paint unusual lack of skin color, but not complete lack of pigment as seen in albinism. Compare hyperpigmentation. hypopigmentation [hi″po-pig″men-ta´-shun] abnormally decreased pigmentation resulting from decreased melanin production.

In dogs depigmentation, due to damage of basal keratinocytes, due usually to immune-mediated diseases, e.g. lupus erythematosus.
