FDA analyses since 1979 for more highly chlorinated dioxins have turned up hepta- and octa-chlorinated species in eggs, bacon, chicken, pork chops and beef liver--contamination that the researchers say appears to be related to agricultural use of pentachlorophenol.
Inhibition of ER activation by hexa-, hepta- and octachlorinated biphenyls and suppression of estrogenic signaling found in serum of males chronically exposed to PCBs (Figures 3-5) suggest that PCB 153 and other prevalent congeners could contribute to overall antiestrogenic response.
We used an HP6890 (gas chromatograph)--HP5973 (mass spectrometer) (Hewlett Packard) equipped with SP-2331 fused silica capillary column (60 pm internal diameter) to analyze tetra- to hexachlorinated PCDD/PCDFs, and a DB5 column (30 [micro]m internal diameter) to determine hepta- and octachlorinated isomers.
