Etymology: Gk, haima, blood; L, globus, ball; M; Gk, dis, not; Fr, aise, ease
a type of anemia in which part of the hemoglobin contains iron in the Fe+++ state and is unable to combine with oxygen. The patient may experience cyanosis but is able to function because part of the hemoglobin is normal. See also methemoglobin.
