hemobartonellosis

infection by hemophilic mycoplasmas previously in the genus Haemobartonella in which parasitized erythrocytes are preferentially removed from the circulation by phagocytic cells and an anemia develops. Diagnosis depends on observation of the characteristic rod-shaped and ring-shaped organisms around the periphery of the red cells. See also feline infectious anemia.
