1. a porphyrin chelate of iron, derived from red blood cells; the chloride of heme. It is used to treat the symptoms of various porphyrias.

The reddish-brown crystalline chloride of heme produced when hemoglobin reacts with certain reagents in a test for the presence of blood. Also called hematin chloride.
