salamander a suborder of amphibians that includes three families and a wide variety of genera. They are all characterized by their unique life history which they pass partly on land in a terrestrial form (efts) and partly in water as an aquatic form (newt). Both forms are lizard-like and some of them have bright and distinctive coloring. Reproduction usually occurs in the aquatic phase. Neoteny, the maintenance of larval characteristics throughout life, is a common phenomenon in these animals. salamander poisoning dogs and cats mouthing salamanders may become distressed with excessive salivation, muscular weakness and incoordination and rarely convulsions.
