Etymology: Gk, haploos, single, eidos, form; L, nucleus, nut
a nucleus possessing only half the normal somatic number of chromosomes. It may occur in a germ cell after meiosis and before fertilization. Also called hemikaryon.
A cell nucleus with half the normal number of chromosomes, as in germ cells (ova and sperm) following the normal reduction divisions in gametogenesis.
