The ingestion of hallucinogenic substances may cause psychic dependence and depressive or suicidal psychotic states. Some kinds of hallucinogens are lysergide, mescaline, phencyclidine hydrochloride, and psilocybin.

Certain mushrooms, seeds, and cactus buttons (such as peyote) are also hallucinogenic. They can also cause a person to exhibit behavior symptomatic of a psychotic state of mind.
