grouse a group of related species of game birds in the family Tetraonidae. They are the red grouse (Lagopus scoticus), wood grouse (Tetrao urogallus), black grouse (Lyrurus tetrix), ruffed grouse (Bonasas umbellus), sage grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus) and the prairie chickens (Tympanuchus spp.). grouse disease see trichostrongylustenuis.
