the use of specially prepared leukocytes for the treatment of severe granulocytopenia and for prophylaxis in the prevention of serious infection in patients with leukemia or those receiving cancer chemotherapy. The procedure has the same risks as a blood transfusion. Also called buffy coat transfusion.

The transfusion of mature granulocytic white blood cells for use in infected patients with severe neutropenia (an absolute neutrophil count < 500 cells/mL). GTX is used primarily to treat patients with refractory infections due to neutropenia caused by cancer chemotherapy or stem cell transplantation.
