1. a group descended from a common ancestor.
2. a taxonomic subdivision subordinate to an order (or suborder) and superior to a tribe (or subfamily).

2. A taxonomic category of related organisms ranking below an order and above a genus.

family,
n 1. a group of people related by heredity, such as parents, children, and siblings. The term is sometimes broadened to include related by marriage or those living in the same household, who are emotionally attached, interact regularly, and share concerns for the growth and development of the group and its individual members.

3. the legal definition varies, depending on the jurisdiction and purpose for which the term is defined.
