gopher a small burrowing rodent. Called pocket gopher because of its habit of storing food in a cheek pouch. Species are Thomomys talpoides (gray gopher) and Geomys spp. (pocket gopher). gopher Graduate education A denigrating term for a medical student who is treated as a scut monkey and told to get things for the department through which he or she is rotating at the time. Racing" may sound like an odd term to describe a tortoise, but gopher tortoises are faster than you might think. The area is home to wood storks, gopher tortoises, bald eagles and as many as four federally endangered freshwater mussel species. Robert Taylor, district silviculturist at Conecuh National Forest, also dreams of future populations of plants and animals now rarely seen in his Alabama forest: Japanese honeysuckle and native jasmine, gopher tortoises,endangered Indiana gray bats, the red-cockaded woodpeckers. |
