gun dog
one of the group of domestic dogs developed for use in hunting fowl. The dogs work with the hunter by detecting the scent of birds on the ground, then indicating their location (setters, pointers) or flushing them from the undergrowth, or by retrieving the fallen bird (retrievers). Called also sporting dogs.
