gopher a small burrowing rodent. Called pocket gopher because of its habit of storing food in a cheek pouch. Species are Thomomys talpoides (gray gopher) and Geomys spp. (pocket gopher). gopher Graduate education A denigrating term for a medical student who is treated as a scut monkey and told to get things for the department through which he or she is rotating at the time.
