Maloney was content to let pacesetter Marodima open up a sizeable advantage and didn't seem too concerned when Tramantano came past him with three to jump, but when he asked Enlightenment to go and chase down the two leaders, he seemed to take a long time to get into top gear and it's quite possible that he would have been much closer if Maloney had been more positive and asked his mount for an effort at the top of the hill.
