An intronless gene on chromosome Xq24-q25 that encodes glutamate dehydrogenase 2, a mitochondrial enzyme which forms a homohexamer to recycle glutamate during neurotransmission, catalysing the reversible oxidative deamination of glutamate to alpha-ketoglutarate. It is expressed in the retina and testes.
