A distinctive feature of the breeds concerned, but often a site of fold dermatitis. The hairs also become a source of irritation to the cornea. flank fold1 skin fold from the lower, lateral abdominal wall to the hindlimb at the region of the stifle. gastric f's see gastric folds. gastropancreatic fold1 in the horse connects the stomach and duodenum to the liver, vena cava and pancreas. genital fold1 a transverse peritoneal fold in the pelvis that supports the vas deferens in the male and is the broad ligament of the uterus in the female. glossoepiglottic fold1 extends from the root of the tongue to the base of the epiglottis. gluteal fold1 the crease separating the buttocks from the thigh, usually absent from domestic mammals. head fold1 a fold of blastoderm at the cephalic end of the developing embryo. ileocecal fold1 a short mesenteric fold connecting the ileum and the cecum, and which is used to define the ileum in domestic animals. lacrimal fold1 a fold of mucous membrane at the rostral opening of the nasolacrimal duct. mucosal fold1, mucous fold1 a fold of mucous membrane. nail fold1 the fold of palmar skin around the base and sides of the nail or claw. neural fold1 one of the paired folds lying on either side of the neural plate that form the neural tube in the developing embryo. preputial fold1 the telescopic fold of preputial skin which invests the glans of the stallion's unengorged penis. In the mare, a mucosal fold covering most of the clitoris. pterygomandibular fold1 the fold of mucosa which runs from the lower to upper jaw on the same side of the mouth and caudal to the last molar tooth. rumenoreticular fold1 on the internal ventral wall of the rumenoreticulum and separating the rumen from the reticulum. tail fold1 1. a fold of the blastoderm at the caudal end of the developing embryo. 2. the skin, usually on an obese dog, around the very short tail such as seen on British bulldogs. May be the site of fold dermatitis. 3. site for injection of tuberculin in SID test for tuberculosis in cattle. See also caudal tailfold. urogenital fold1 the transverse peritoneal fold which, in the male, carries the seminal vesicles, the deferent duct and the uterus masculinus. uroproctodeal fold1 in the bird separates the urodeum from the proctodeum. ventricular fold1, vestibular fold1 a false vocal cord. vesical fold1 paired lateral folds of peritoneum containing the bladder's round ligaments. vestigial fold1 a pericardial fold enclosing the remnant of the embryonic left anterior cardinal vein. vocal f's see vocal cords.
