Glossina /Glos·si·na/ (glos-i´nah) the tsetse flies, a genus of biting flies that are vectors of trypanosomes causing trypanosomiasis in humans and other animals.

A genus of bloodsucking dipterous flies comprising the tsetse flies of tropical and subtropical Africa; they serve as vectors of the pathogenic trypanosomes that cause various forms of African trypanosomiasis.

a genus of biting flies in the family Glossinidae. It includes the tsetse flies, which serve as vectors of trypanosomes causing various forms of trypanosomiasis in humans and animals. Listed species of tsetse flies are G. brevipalpis, G. fusca (forest tsetse), G. longipalpis, G. morsitans (savannah tsetse), G. pallidipes, G. palpalis (riverine tsetse), G. tachinoides.

A total of 897 flies of both sexes were caught; Glossina fuscipes quanzensis was the only tsetse fly species found (Table).
Human African trypanosomiasis (HAT), also known as sleeping sickness, is caused by a flagellated trypanosome protozoan and transmitted by Glossina (tsetse) flies.
Wherever people come into close proximity with these reservoirs (when visiting game parks, for example) the potential exists for transmission to humans by the tsetse fly vectors of the Glossina morsitans group.
