Surgical removal of gum tissue. Also called gum resection.

gingivectomy (jin´jivek´tmē),
n the surgical excision of unsupported gingival tissue to the level where it is attached, creating a new gingival margin apical in position to the old.

n the elimination of periodontal pockets surrounding abutment teeth; requires the removal of gingival tissue on the adjacent edentulous area.
