Etymology: Fr, curette, scoop

scraping of material from the wall of a cavity or other surface, performed to remove tumors or other abnormal tissue or to obtain tissue for microscopic examination. Curettage also refers to clearing unwanted material from fistulas and areas of chronic infection. It may be performed with a blunt or a sharp curet or by suction.

n the debridement and planing to smoothness of the root surface of a tooth to eliminate deposits on the root.

n the process of debridement of the epithelial attachment, the ulcerated and entire (pocket) epithelium, and subjacent inflamed and altered gingival tissues. The procedure is no longer recommended for the health of the periodontium.

endometrial curettage

physical curettage of the uterus is not practiced in animals but chemical irritation achieves a similar effect and is used in cows. The commonest infusion is an iodine preparation such as Lugol's iodine.

subgingival curettage

aids in the treatment of periodontal disease; consists of removing inflammatory tissue under the free gingival margin and adjacent bony structures.

chalazion 

A chronic inflammatory lipogranuloma due to retention of the secretion (such as blocked ducts) of a meibomian gland in the tarsus of an eyelid. It is characterized by a gradual painless swelling of the gland without marked inflammatory signs and sometimes astigmatism which is induced by the cyst pressing on the cornea (Fig. C5). Small chalazia may disappear spontaneously but large ones usually have to be incised and curetted (i.e. removal of the pus with a scraper) through a tarsal incision. Resolution may also occur after local injection of a corticosteroid drug (e.g. dexamethasone or triamcinolone). Syn. meibomian cyst (although it is not a true cyst because its walls are made of granulomatous tissue and not lined with epithelium). See internal hordeolum.
