extension /ex·ten·sion/ (-shun) 1. the movement by which the two ends of any jointed part are drawn away from each other. 2. the bringing of the members of a limb into or toward a straight condition. nail extension extension exerted on the distal fragment of a fractured bone by means of a nail or pin (Steinmann pin) driven into the fragment.
extension [iksten′shən] Etymology: L, extendere, to stretch a "straightening" movement allowed by certain joints of the skeleton that increases the angle between two adjoining bones, such as extending the leg, which increases the posterior angle between the femur and the tibia.
