Clinically, as scientists gain more and more genetic information and a better understanding of gene-environment interactions, occupational therapy practitioners can play a role in preparing individuals to adjust to probable life changes and make needed lifestyle modifications.
Several states, including California, have recently enacted restrictions on genetic testing that go beyond the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act, which prohibits improper use of genetic information to deny health insurance coverage.
The proposal is up for public comment over the next two months and would prohibit employers from deliberately acquiring genetic information from current and potential employees.
