The association of acanthosis nigricans with a generalised absence of subcutaneous fat, accompanied by muscle hypertrophy, hyperlipaemia, diabetes mellitus and hepatosplenomegaly with cirrhosis.

Types of lipodystrophy
• Congential lipodystrophy:
   – Congenital generalised lipodystrophy—Berardinelli-Seip syndrome, also known as Seip syndrome;
   – Familial partial lipodystrophy.
• Acquired lipodystrophy:
   – Acquired partial lipodystrophy—Barraquer-Simons syndrome;
   – Acquired generalised lipodystrophy;
   – Centrifugal abdominal lipodystrophy;
   – Lipoatrophia annularis (Ferreira-Marques lipoatrophia);
   – Localised lipodystrophy;
   – HIV-associated lipodystrophy;
   – Semicircular lipoatrophy.
