tympany [tim′pənē] Etymology: Gk, tympanon, drum a loud, high-pitched musical sound percussed over the upper gastric area or a puffed-out cheek. tympany [tim´pah-ne] a tympanic, or bell-like, percussion note, often elicited during percussion over a pneumothorax or tympanites (distended abdomen).
