γ-aminobutyric acid /γ-ami·no·bu·tyr·ic ac·id/ (GABA) (-bu-tēr´ik) the principal inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain but also occurring in several extraneural tissues, including kidney and pancreatic islet β cells.
