(1) A gene on chromosome 22q13.1 that encodes a galectin family-type carbohydrate-binding protein, which is implicated in modulating cell-cell and cell-matrix interactions, and may regulate apoptosis, cell proliferation and cell differentiation.
(2) This is also a retired HUGO symbol for what is now designated LGALS3, see there.
