Research has suggested that flavonoids and/or furanocoumarin compounds found in grapefruit are the substances that act to block the enzyme in the intestines that normally metabolizes these medications.
But a study published last May in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition discovered that a group of natural chemicals called furanocoumarins were the likely culprit.
The researchers filtered and processed grapefruit juice to remove its furanocoumarins.
