adder /ad·der/ (ad´er)
2. any of many venomous snakes of the family Viperidae, such as the puff adder and European viper.

death adder  Acanthophis antarcticus, an extremely venomous elapid snake of Australia and New Guinea with a short, stout body and a tail with a spine at the tip.
puff adder  Bitis arrietans, an extremely venomous, brightly colored, viperine snake found in Africa and Arabia; when annoyed it inflates its stubby body and hisses loudly.

adder,
any of numerous venomous elapid and viperine snakes. The death adder is found in Australia and New Guinea, and the puff adder is found in Africa and Arabia. See also snakebite.

adder
a loose nomenclature of snakes which cuts across scientific classification. Includes puff adder, common English adder which are viperine snakes, and the Australian adder which is an elapine snake.

death adder
gray-brown, dark, banded, 30 inch Australian elapid snake which is aggressive and a rapid striker. The venom is a potent toxin. The bite often leaves no mark but is usually fatal. Called also Acanthophis antarcticus.
desert death adder
a specially adapted, smaller desert form of the death adder. Called also Acanthophis antarcticus pyrrhus.
puff adder
Bitis arietans, an unaggressive but highly poisonous African snake, 3 to 5 ft long with a thick body.
