frusemideFurosemide, a drug that causes an increased output of urine (a diuretic) so as to relieve the body of unwanted retained water (oedema). Furosemide is a loop diuretic. It acts on the kidney tubules where it interferes with chloride and sodium reabsorption from the dilute filtered urine. This prevents reabsorption of water into the blood and the result is a large volume of dilute urine. The drug is on the WHO official list. Brand names are Froop, Frusol, Frusix and Lasix. The drug is one of the ingredients in a range of diuretic preparations such as Diumide-K Continus, Fru-Co, Frumil, Frusene, Lasikal, Lasilatone and Lasoride.
