A palpable vibration, as felt by the hand placed on the chest during coughing or speaking.

Etymology: L, a growling
a tremulous vibration of the chest wall caused by vocalization that is primarily palpated during physical examination. Kinds of fremitus include tactile fremitus and vocal fremitus.

a vibration perceptible on palpation or auscultation; see also thrill.
tactile fremitus a type of vocal fremitus found over an area of secretions.
tussive fremitus one felt on the chest while the patient coughs.
vocal fremitus (VF) transmission of the spoken voice to the chest wall, detectable by auscultation or palpation; it is increased with lung consolidation and decreased with pleural effusion, pneumothorax, and airway obstruction.

n the palpable vibrations of nonvascular origin that can be noted by placing the hand on the chest. See also thrill.

fremitus
a vibration perceptible on palpation or auscultation, e.g. palpable in the middle uterine artery in late pregnant cows, palpable in a grossly enlarged thyroid gland affected by goiter.
