forced expiratory volume (FEV)

the volume that can be forcefully expired after a full inspiration, aka forced vital capacity . Measurement of the volume expired in the first second (FEV1) as a fraction of vital capacity (FEV1 / VC}) is used in the assessment of airways obstruction, e.g. in asthma. See also lung volumes.
