An opening in the greater wing of the sphenoid bone, in front of the spine, transmitting the middle meningeal artery.

foramen spinosum,
a small opening near the posterior angle of the greater wing of the sphenoid bone. It is the smallest of three pairs of sphenoidal foramina that transmit nerves and blood vessels.

They include the absence of the foramen spinosum on the affected side and the enlargement of the proximal tympanic segment of the facial nerve canal adjacent to the cochleariform process.
