footballer's ankle

also known as anterior impingement of the ankle. Occurs as a result of repeated injury to the joint capsule and ligaments. Overstretching allows excessive movement of the bones with local inflammation and the development of bony outgrowths at the front of the ankle where the capsule is attached. These may break off, becoming 'loose bodies' within the joint, resulting in pain and tenderness across the front of the ankle and on bending the foot up and down.
