EFEMP1

A gene on chromosome 2p16 that encodes a member of the fibulin family of extracellular matrix glycoproteins, which contain tandemly repeated epidermal growth factor (EGF)-like repeats followed by a C-terminus fibulin-type domain.

Molecular pathology
EFEMP1 is upregulated in malignant gliomas and may play a role in tumour aggression; EFEMP1 mutations cause Doyne honeycomb retinal dystrophy.

Blood tests were performed on each group to assess serum and plasma levels of various markers, such as mesothelin, fibulin-3, interleukin-8 (IL-8), endothelin-1, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and YKL-40.
This gene produces a protein, fibulin-3, that is present in levels four to five times higher in the plasma of patients with mesothelioma compared to levels in asbestos-exposed patients or patients with several other conditions that cause tumors in the chest," says lead investigator Harvey I.
Fibulin-3 is a protein that floats outside cells, coating the cells and free floating in blood plasma and extracellular fluid.
