fibulin 1

fibulin 1

A secreted glycoprotein incorporated into a fibrillar extracellular matrix by laminin and nidogen binding. Fibulin servs several functions, including cell adhesion and migration along protein fibres within the ECM; it may be critical for developmental processes and contribute to the ECM supramolecular organisation, especially of basement membranes. It has been implicated cell transformation and tumour invasion, and may be a tumour suppressor. It may also play a role in haemostasis and thrombosis by binding fibrinogen and incorporating itself into blood clots, as well as in modulating the neurotrophic activities of APP, especially soluble APP.
