fenoprofen calcium
[fē′nəprō′fen]
a nonsteroidal antiinflammatory agent and analgesic.
indications It is prescribed in the treatment of arthritis and other painful inflammatory conditions.
contraindications Renal dysfunction, upper GI disease, or known hypersensitivity to this drug, to aspirin, or to nonsteroidal antiinflammatory medication prohibits its use.
adverse effects Among the more serious adverse effects are GI disturbances, gastric or duodenal ulceration, dizziness, skin rash, and tinnitus.

fenoprofen calcium,
n brand name: Nalfon;
drug class: nonsteroidal antiinflammatory;
action: inhibits prostaglandin synthesis by interfering with cyclooxygenase needed for biosynthesis;
uses: mild to moderate pain, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, acute gout, dysmenorrhea.

n brand name: Duragesic 25, 50, 75, 100 Transdermal Patches;
drug class: narcotic analgesic, Controlled Substance Schedule II;
action: interacts with opioid receptors in the central nervous system to alter pain perception;
uses: management of chronic pain when opioids are necessary.

The NSAIDS of choice in treating menstrual migraines are: ketoprofen (Orudis) ibuprofen (Advil and Motrin) fenoprofen calcium (Nalfon) naproxen (Naprosyn) nabumetone (Relafen) For best results when using NSAIDs to treat migraines, usage should be started two to three days before menstrual flow actually begins and the therapy should be continued throughout the period.
