feline calicivirus infection
a common cause of upper respiratory disease and ulcerative glossitis in cats. Affected cats show varying degrees of ocular and nasal discharge, coughing and sneezing. Pneumonia sometimes occurs, mainly in young or debilitated cats. Ulceration of the tongue and palate is a regular feature of the disease, but lips, nares and skin are also sometimes involved. Lameness, diarrhea and seizures have also rarely been associated with calicivirus infection. Many recovered cats remain carriers of the virus, shedding infectious organisms from the pharynx. Most of these are asymptomatic, but some may have chronic oral lesions. Feline calicivirus has also been associated with feline urological syndrome, but its role in that disorder remains unclear. See also feline viral respiratory disease complex. A virulent systemic strain has been identified, which is capable of causing severe systemic disease with high fever, facial and limb edema, ulceration of the skin, and death.
